When you share a photo of an outfit and an app lists the jacket, trousers and shoes in it, that is outfit detection. This guide explains the general idea, without the jargon.
Step 1: Finding the clothing
Computer vision models look at an image and work out where the items are. They separate a jacket from a shirt underneath it, or shoes from the floor, by learning patterns from very large numbers of labelled images.
Step 2: Naming each item
Once an item is found, the model classifies it: type (jacket, jeans, sneakers), and often details such as colour, pattern and cut.
Step 3: Organising the results
The detected items can then be tagged, for example by style, season or occasion, and grouped into a wardrobe or collection you can search.
Why results are not always perfect
- Layered clothing can hide items.
- Poor lighting or low-resolution photos make details harder to see.
- Unusual poses can confuse the model.
- Similar items, like two shades of beige, are easy to mix up.
Getting the best results
- Use a clear, high-resolution image.
- Choose photos where the full outfit is visible.
- Check the detected items and correct anything that looks wrong.

The short version
Outfit detection finds, names and organises clothing in an image. It is fast and handy, and a quick review still helps.
