Packing light is easier than it sounds. The trick is to pack a small, coordinated capsule, so every top works with every bottom, instead of packing outfits.
The basic formula
For two weeks, aim for roughly this and adjust to your trip:
- 4 to 5 tops that all match your bottoms
- 2 to 3 bottoms (for example jeans, trousers and shorts or a skirt)
- 1 or 2 layers (a light jacket or cardigan)
- 1 dress or smart outfit if you need one
- 2 pairs of shoes plus the pair you wear on the plane
- Underwear and socks for 7 days, then do laundry once
Pick a colour palette
Choose two or three neutrals and one accent. If everything coordinates, you get many outfit combinations from few items.
Pack smart
- Roll soft items and fold structured ones.
- Wear your bulkiest items on the plane.
- Use packing cubes to separate categories.
- Put liquids in a clear bag, and check airline limits before you go.
Plan outfits before you leave
Lay out each outfit and take a photo, or save the looks in an app, so you can see how pieces combine. That way you pack what you will actually wear.
Packing checklist
- Passport, tickets, wallet, phone and charger
- Medication and toiletries
- Clothes from the formula above
- Adapter and any chargers you need
- Reusable water bottle and a small day bag
The short version
Pack a coordinated capsule instead of individual outfits, plan the combinations in advance, and plan for one laundry stop.
